THE VOLTA-OTI GMA EXCELLENCE AWARDS: THE STORY OF DR. JOSEPH MAWUNYO, FORMER FGMSA FINANCIAL SECRETARY.
It is no news that Ghana’s health sector is replete with numerous health care workers. Into the bargain to the numbersis the heterogeneity of the associations and/or careers that constitute this sector. The lens of this story would focus on the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), particularly the Volti/Oti Division.
The Volta Regional Division of the Ghana Medical Association comprising the Volta and Oti Regions, on the 4th of February, held its maiden excellence awards ceremony to honour outstanding medical practitioners and healthcare facilities in the two regions. The ceremony was held at the Volta Serene Hotel in Ho. Awards were presented to 15 doctors and 3 health facilities. The Honourable Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa was also honoured for his valuable contribution to the health sector at the regional and national level.
Amongst the 15 doctors that were honoured at the ceremony, we’d like to draw a bead on an honouree, Dr. Joseph Mawunyo – a former FGMSA financial secretary. Dr. Joseph Mawunyo Apeadido had his MBChB degree from the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale. Dr. Joseph would remain a forerunner in the annals of the UDS – Medical Students Association (UDS – MSA) after he rose to become the first UDS-MSA member to serve on the Federation’s executive board. He served as the Federation’s financial secretary in 2010.
Dr. Joseph Mawunyo Apeadido was feted for his remarkable efforts in marshaling doctors for the Association’s programmes both within and without the two regions and his fidelity to his infirmary. He works at the Worawora Government Hospital, a 110 – bed capacity designated Regional Hospital located in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region where he doubles as the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital. With developed experience over the past decennium, Dr. Joseph is a Senior Medical Officer – cum – Clinical coordinator.
Dr. Apeadido is noted for discharging his duties meritoriously and with alacrity making him indispensable in this epoch to the Oti Region and Ghana Health Service en bloc. His story of an A-OK service was no different when he concomitantly acted as the Head of the Covid-19 Case Management Team for the Oti Regional Health Directorate and Deputy-Director Clinical Care for twenty-four months.
Not long ago, he partook in a fellowship in emergency medicine at Inje Univerity Hospital as a donee of a structured medical education support from Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH). The fellowship lasted for half a year. Prior to this support, Dr. Joseph had had a deep aspiration to specialize in emergency medicine. This experience definitely comes as a fulfillment to his career ambition.
We, FGMSA, would want to express our vicarious pleasure to all honourees of the ceremony most especially Dr. Joseph Mawunyo Apeadido. Your results speak for themselves and we refuse to be mute about how we are borne up by your exploits. Long live The Dr. Joseph Mawunyo Vision, long live FGMSA, long live GMA!!!
